Santa Lucia Parish, which turned 50 on December 8, 2007, is located in Florencio Varela and includes the districts of Villa Vatteone (where the main Parish church is located), Mayol (where we have the chapel of San Francisco and Santa Clara), San Martin and Pista de Trote (where construction of the chapel of San Jose de Nazaret began in 2003). The four districts comprise a population of about 25,000.
Since mid-1994, upon request from the Diocese of Quilmes, the Parish has been managed by a consecrated community of The Movement of the Word of God.
Many families in our Parish still experience the difficulties of unemployment or have to survive on welfare; the lack of education and dignified medical assistance; the lack of opportunities for our young people, who become victims of addictions, hopelessness, and crime; poor nutrition, which hurts families; precarious clothing and housing that offer no protection against weather conditions; insecurity, and violence.
On the other hand, it brings us deep joy to witness the work of our good God among us, generating life and accompanying the growth of our entire community where, for example, every year 200 families participate in Family Catechesis, about 120 boys and girls (11 to 15 years of age) participate in perseverance and Growth in the faith groups, and more than 100 young people over 16 participate in the Communitarian Process for Confirmation. We also have 18 communities for prayer and service (youth and adult), 18 Bible Study groups, and over 200 Circles of the Virgin with 8 families each.
We have organized a missionary structure with brothers and sisters from the community, made up of 45 teams with an average of 4 missionaries per team, which allows us to reach every family in the Parish district at all times.
In addition, every week brothers and sisters from our communities hold pastoral healthcare sessions at the Mother-Child Hospital in Florencio Varela.
At the moment we offer humanitarian aid through Social Services and Caritas to care for 80 families in the Santa Lucia Parish; we are caring for 60 families in the Chapel of San Francisco and Santa Clara, and 20 in the chapel San Jose de Nazaret. We also have a social work service (3 social workers), a mental health service (6 psychologists and psychopedagogy professionals), and a free legal advice service. This year we want to start preventive medicine and dental care services.
The number of sick brothers who approach our pharmacy looking for medication is very numerous, since the pharmacy of the Mother-Child Hospital —located a block away from the Parish— cannot handle the demand for medication.
Any relief that can be brought or sent to us will be extremely useful. We need clothing, sneakers, medicines, nonperishable food, mattresses, blankets, construction and roofing materials, tools, and school supplies. We also need cash to purchase medications; to finance a project of humanization and socialization of children from families at risk; and for evangelizing activities like summer camps or week-long retreats with our children, youth, and adults.
May Santa Lucia make us witnesses of a radical love to the Saviour!
